Sage releases a new SONIC fly rod and an ESN reel specific to Euro-nymphing | Outbreak Magazine

Last week, with the trout season in full swing, Sage launched two new products aimed directly at these anglers. Bainbridge Island, Washington’s latest rod offering, the Sage SONIC, is a multi-application rod that fits into its lineup just below its famous flagship X rod. Sage also launched its new ESN reel, which is the first reel of its kind dedicated specifically to the euro and other styles of tight line nymphs.

As noted, the new SONIC fits into Sage’s existing line of freshwater fishing rods, rather than replacing one of the current models offered by Sage. The SONIC is a multi-application rod, designed primarily for versatility, capable of doing anything for trout anglers, whom the day calls for drys, nymphs, streamers, floating lines or sinking lines.

On the one hand, it might be fair to think of the SONIC as a reinvented and re-tuned ONE, given that the SONIC is built on the brand’s Konnetic ™ technology, much like its beloved old flagship rod. Unlike the ONE, however, which debuted in Sage’s lineup at nearly $ 900, the SONIC is a mid-priced rod, priced at $ 550. And so, you could think of it as an improved next-gen ACCEL.

No matter what you call it, the SONIC is finished in an attractive “juniper” green with black wire wraps, is constructed with premium components and its range extends from 3 to 6 weights, leaving anglers with plenty to choose from. SONIC models capable of handling everything from brook trout to rainbow trout to bonefish or striped bass.

Sage’s new reel, the ESN (European Style Nymphing) reel, which borrows the namesake from Sage’s ESN rod, is an innovative new offering designed specifically for the tight line nymph. The ESN reel has a number of features designed to solve European nymph problems, the most notable of which is a one-of-a-kind weight system, which includes 0.5oz, 1oz, and 1.5oz weights, which allows fishermen to refine. -Adjust the balance of almost any rod and reel combo.

The ESN reel also includes a full frame, designed to prevent fine lines and Euro-nymph world leaders from slipping through the reel, a common and hair-raising phenomenon with Euro rigs. Also on board is a large shaft design for fast pickups, a thinner coil that is more in tune with the smaller diameters of Euro lines, Sage’s excellent fully sealed carbon disc drag system and a knob. one-turn drag.

The retail price of the ESN coil is $ 425. Replacement coils will set you back $ 212.

The Sage SONIC fly rod and ESN reel are available immediately from Sage and Sage dealers.
