Gareth Bale thinks Antonio Conte made a mistake at Tottenham by not picking Wales ace Joe Rodon in his starting XI

GARETH BALE has told Antonio Conte that Joe Rodon should play for Tottenham.

Rodon made just ten appearances in all competitions at club level last season and the centre-back has been tipped to leave Spurs this summer with Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Brighton all linked with the 24-year-old.

Despite the lack of playing time, the defender helped Wales qualify for the World Cup final with impressive play-offs against Austria and Ukraine.

And Bale, a former Tottenham team-mate, believes Rodon will be a resounding success in the Premier League if he leaves Conte’s Champions League qualifying squad.

Wales captain Bale said: “For me personally I feel like he should play at Tottenham. He’s shown time and time again how good he is, I personally think when I was there last year, I felt he deserved to play.

“He’s a top professional, he’s not moaning – he’s trying to moan but I tell him not to. I’m just saying keep your head down, keep working because that way the manager will never be able to use that excuse not to play you. So he’s a very good professional, he’s a great young player.

“Of course he knows he should be playing week after week. He wants to play week after week. I don’t feel like he’s really had the opportunity to play a consistent run of games at Tottenham and I think if he did, he would be fantastic for them.

“Even if he has to go to another team, he’s going to strengthen that team no matter who it is. So he’s a great player, obviously a great friend and also a top professional.”

With the World Cup in Qatar in November, Wales boss Rob Page is eager to see his top stars play regularly at club level.

Rodon failed to move away from Spurs in January and Page believes the ex-Swansea star, who cost Tottenham £12million, can move on to another level if he avoids getting sit on the bench.

Page added: “In an ideal world, we want our players to play week in and week out, but we’ve done well so far.

“We’ve always had this kind of scenario where players come to camp, they don’t play at club level but when they put on the shirt they go and give an amazing performance and because of those performances that’s why we are sitting here today talking about the World Cup, so I’m not overly concerned about that.

“I’ll use Joe Rodon as an example. I think Joe has been exceptional. What he’s done in the games he’s played for us has been exceptional, considering he’s not playing at club level.

“He can take it to another level. He’s been very good, but I think there’s more to come from him. And I think he can achieve that by playing week after week at domestic level.

“He’s a Premiership player. If you had to draw a Premiership player, it’s Joe Rodon to a T, isn’t it? He has all the attributes, but he just needs to play week after week to maintain this level that he gave us.”
