Have you accumulated your American Express Membership Rewards points consistently over the past few months or even years?
Now is the time to turn them into Velocity Points to take advantage of that balance bonus and get closer to the next points-based award flight booking on Virgin Australia or its international partners such as Air Canada, Etihad Airways, Hawaiian Airlines , Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and United Airlines.
From August 1 to August 15, American Express is offering a 25% bonus on the conversion of its Membership Rewards points to Velocity points.
The promotion covers the following points of the rewards program:
- Ascending Membership Rewards
- Premium Climb
- Business rise
- Business ascension
- David Jones Membership Rewards
There is a minimum transfer of 2,000 Membership Rewards points (or 1,998 Membership Rewards points for Business Ascent) from the American Express Membership Rewards program to Velocity to claim this 25% bonus.
Since the “exchange rate” of 2 Membership Rewards points is usually equivalent to 1 Velocity point, this means that your 2,000 Membership Rewards points with this 25% bonus will be converted into 1,250 Velocity points.
(The only exception to this 2:1 conversion rate is American Express Business Ascent, where 3 Membership Rewards points equal 2 Velocity points.)
You can claim this bonus as many times as you like until August 15, as long as you transfer this minimum 2,000 membership rewards to Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer each time.
Another way to look at it: the number of points needed to catch a flight on Virgin Australia and its international airlines will be reduced by 25%.
AMEX notes that “Transfers are normally immediate, but please allow up to 1 business day for the transfer to complete” – in any case, shortly after these Membership Rewards points are sent, you will be closer to make your reservation or lock in your upgrade.
